Art is a medium for the transfer of ideas and emotions, IMHO, and I agree it's not a mirror. Generally, art does not reflect reality exactly, that's what makes it art and not, say, the evening news. Of course, you could call the news "art" these days, since it doesn't necessarily reflect reality very precisely either. But I digress...
I suppose you could use a hammer to transmit ideas, but there are other ways. I like thunderbolts. I also like breezes. I suppose there's a happy medium (get it? yuk yuk yuk) somewhere in between. It depends on what you are trying to communicate and to whom.
